Port electric tractor is the core equipment for container transportation at ports, mainly used for short distance container transfer operations in yards and at the forefront of ports. Compared to traditional fuel powered tractors, electric vehicle models have low noise and zero exhaust emissions, making them more suitable for operating in enclosed port yards. The port operating conditions have the characteristics of frequent start stop, continuous heavy load operation, narrow site, and cross traffic flow. Improper operation can easily lead to safety issues such as collisions, battery failures, and brake failures. To fully utilize the performance of electric tractor and extend the service life of the entire vehicle, operators must master the complete operation process, inspection points, and safety regulations. This article focuses on the port scene and explains the complete set of usage methods for electric tractors, including pre departure inspection, on-site operations, parking and charging, and daily maintenance.

1、 Conduct a comprehensive inspection before driving to eliminate operational hazards

Before each online operation, the operator must complete the static and dynamic inspection of the vehicle, and it is prohibited to put the vehicle into port transportation with faults.

Firstly, conduct a visual and chassis inspection. Check for any deformation or cracks in the body, towing pins, and connecting seats, check for normal tire pressure, inspect for any damage or stone inclusions on the tire surface, and ensure that the wheel rim fixing bolts are securely fastened. Check whether there is leakage in the brake pipeline and joint position, and whether the lights, reverse warning lights, sound and light alarms, and rearview mirrors are intact. The visibility of the port yard is limited, and the alarm device is the key to avoiding collisions between personnel and container trailers.

Next, focus on inspecting the power battery system. Observe the SOC level of the instrument battery. If the battery level is low, it is necessary to arrange for charging in advance. It is strictly prohibited to forcefully overload for a long time with low battery. Check for any scratches, damages, or signs of water ingress on the battery casing, and ensure that the battery terminals are not loose or overheating. Turn on the main power switch, perform a power on self-test, and confirm that the instrument panel has no fault alarm codes. If there is a battery, motor, or electronic control malfunction alarm, immediately stop using, report to maintenance personnel, and prohibit operation with a problem.

Finally, test the control components. Test the driving brake and parking brake in an unloaded state to confirm that the braking response is normal; Test the steering system and ensure there is no jamming or abnormal noise during steering; Check that the accelerator pedal returns smoothly. All projects must be confirmed to have no abnormalities before entering the yard for operations.

2、 Port operation standards, safe transfer of containers

The narrow passage of the port yard and the dense stacking of containers require the electric tractor to follow exclusive operating procedures for starting, turning, reversing, and towing.

When starting the vehicle, slowly press the power button to output power smoothly, and prohibit sudden acceleration by pressing the pedal. Electric tractor has fast torque output, and starting too aggressively under heavy load can easily cause impact damage to the traction mechanism and wheel slip. Strictly follow the speed limit regulations of the port when driving on site. Drive at low speed inside the yard, slow down in advance when turning, and reserve sufficient turning radius for large angle turns to prevent scratching the container body and stacking.

Dragging container operation, approach the trailer at low speed, align with the towing pin, confirm that the locking mechanism is fully engaged, and then slightly pull to test the connection reliability. Only after confirming the completion of trailer braking and signal line connection can it be transported. During the driving process, pay attention to the movements of surrounding personnel, forklifts, and trucks, always pay attention to blind spots, and turn on sound and light alarms when reversing. If necessary, arrange on-site command personnel.

Continuously observe the onboard instrument panel during the homework process, and monitor the battery temperature and motor temperature in real-time. If the instrument panel indicates that the temperature is too high, park in a nearby safe area and idle to cool down. Do not immediately turn off the power. Continuous high-intensity work, reasonable arrangement of rotation rest, to avoid long-term high load operation of motors and electronic controls. When working on rainy days, pay attention to slippery road surfaces, further reduce vehicle speed, minimize sudden braking, and prevent skidding.

3、 End of homework, parking and charging operation

After completing the daily transportation task, standardized parking and correct charging are important links in protecting the three electricity system.

Choose a designated parking area at the port for vehicle parking, away from container stacks and flammable materials. Step on the brake pedal, and after the vehicle comes to a complete stop, pull up the parking brake, shift the gear to neutral, turn off the low-voltage accessories, and then disconnect the high-voltage power supply of the entire vehicle. Clean the sediment and dust on the surface of the car body, chassis, and battery box. The salt spray environment in the port is prone to corrosion of parts, and clean them in a timely manner to reduce rusting.

Priority should be given to using high-power DC charging piles provided by the port for charging. Before connecting the charging gun, check that there is no water accumulation or damage to the gun head. Follow the procedure to connect the vehicle end first and then start charging. Pay attention to charging data during charging, monitor battery temperature, and stop charging immediately if any abnormalities occur. It is not recommended to recharge when the battery is depleted. It can be recharged with 20% to 30% of the remaining battery power for daily operations, which is beneficial for extending the battery cycle life. After charging is complete, end the charging program first, then unplug the charging gun and secure the cable.

4、 Daily maintenance and usage taboos

The air in the port contains salt spray and large dust, so the maintenance cycle of electric tractors should be appropriately shortened compared to ordinary site vehicles. Clean daily, regularly arrange maintenance personnel to inspect high-voltage lines, insulation layers of connectors, check cooling systems, clean battery cooling air ducts, and prevent blockages that may cause poor heat dissipation.

During use, there are several taboos that operators need to keep in mind: it is strictly prohibited to disassemble battery packs and high-voltage components of electronic control without authorization; High voltage faults must be handled by certified maintenance personnel; Prohibit vehicles from wading deeper than the manufacturer's specified limit to prevent water ingress and short circuits in the high-voltage system; Do not park for long periods of time when fully charged and exposed to direct sunlight; Under heavy load conditions, it is prohibited to continuously apply the brakes on long-distance downhill slopes, and the motor brake should be used reasonably to assist in deceleration.

Standardized operation methods can ensure the safe and orderly operation of container transportation in ports, reduce the probability of vehicle failures, lower maintenance costs, and fully leverage the operational value of CAMC port electric tractors in dock scenarios.
